A Musical Masterpiece

Listing this Album, or for that matter any of Sonia's pieces, under Pop is ridiculous. This is nothing short of jazzy R&B. She sings with so much soul. A few of my favorite selections would be "Summer and Wine" and "This I Know". Sonia Rao is incredible. Her music is very innovative and I would compare her to the likes of Nina Simone and Esperanza Spalding.

Sonia Rao rocks!

Refreshingly honest story telling delivered with a sexy innocence that is irresistible and contagious, rocking her jams and vocals with hypnotic elegance. Sonia will blow your sox off when you see her live. She's got the beauty, brains, sensitivity and strength to make the magic happen. Check it out.

Standing on the shoulders of giants...

Sonia: I know it is unfair to compare singers with genuinely unique voices to other singers. It is unfortunate that the general American public's box is so small, and that artists such as yourself go to the wayside far too often because of this reason. That said, I'm going to say that first and most importantly: you sound like you.

But if I *HAD* to describe your music to someone who had never heard you sing, and the only way they would listen is if I gave them a reference point (i.e., compared your voice to other artists), I would say this:

"This I Know" sounds like Alicia Keys left the vocal acrobatics at home, and sang pure melodies from her heart. (No disrespect to Queen A meant.)
"In My Room" sounds like Carly Simon circa '70s, with a little more soul and heart.
"Hiding" sounds like "The Fray" with lyrics that I can actually identify with.
"She" (My favorite song on the record, hands down) sounds like Adele was brought up in Houston and took voice lessons with Beyonce from Romeo Johnson.
"Morning" sounds like Jordin Sparks had 15 years of classical vocal training.
"Summer and Wine" sounds like…no one. Just no one. I am struggling so much to come up with someone…anyone. You are just YOU on this song.
"Either Way Now" sounds like Nina Simone was inspired by Elton John, or the other way around. ;-)
"Calm Her" is…amazing. A mixture of Amy Winehouse (RIP) and Rihanna.
"Here Now" is pure Sonia, maybe influenced by Jack Johnson in the instrumentation, but it sounds more like inspiration from friends and family to continue making art.

I love this record, and like I said…there is really no comparison. But I hope I was at least somewhat close in mentioning some of the names of those who came before who inspired you, and also some of your contemporaries who you appreciate. You inspire me. Thank you.
