Album Review

Singer Kelly Jones — not to be confused with the Stereophonics' male singer-guitarist of the same name — could hardly have made a happier record than Shebang! It's a welcome shift from 2006's Handle with Care, a more introspective but unmemorable effort that tilted toward Americana. This one finds Jones going for pure pop, and she's done her homework, giving impeccable melodic twists and turns to 10 quaint confections toying with the ins and outs of love. Jones' pert voice is perfect for the bright arrangements on tunes like "Fire Escape," "Same Songs," and the oughta-be-a-hit "There Goes My Baby"; the cheeriness is infectious. Unexpected chord and tempo changes enliven the frug-friendly "Lovers," a strong effort from multi-instrumentalist Mike Viola, who proves an ideal writing partner for Jones. As does Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, who co-wrote the tart "Crazy Talk." There and elsewhere, Jones shows she can remain perky and poptimistic even when dismissing someone — even her kiss-offs are champagne kisses. Shebang! succeeds on every level and easily holds up as one of the best power pop albums of 2008, all placid cool in urban sunshine.

Customer Reviews

Kelly Jones and SheBANG! are a revelation

Thank goodness for Kelly Jones and the pop mastery that is SheBANG!; here is a record so fun and unpretentious, so not trying to be moody or morose, but just pure unadulterated pop deliciousness. Jones' voice is adorable, part sass and part little girl, and all pitch-perfect. The songs are so well-crafted and catchy you won't be able to get them out of your head. Nor would you want to. Nice one, Ms Kelly Jones!

Top Album Of The Year 2008

"SheBANG!" clocks in at just under 28 minutes and all ten songs are fantastic. So catchy and melodic as if early 80's Marshall Crenshaw and The Bangles decided to work together. This might give you an idea of what an album full of pop gems sounds like... It will likely be one of our most played albums on the air this year joining the releases from Rachael Yamagata, The Pretenders, She & Him, Rick Springfield and Randy Newman. - Michael McCartney "The Time Machine" KEAO / KONI / KPMW

One of the best albums of 2008!

A beautifully crafted pop album full of great hooks. Kelly's voice is fantastic, the songs are fun and the playing is great!

A singer and songwriter whose music is a charming blend of pop sweetness, folky lilt, and country twang, Kelly Jones was born in Ridgefield, Washington. After spending time in New York City and Nashville, Jones settled in Los Angeles, and self-released her debut EP, Brave Heartache, in 2004. An independent album, Handle with Care, followed in 2006. After writing a batch of songs with power pop obsessive Mike Viola, Jones released her significantly poppier third effort, 2008's Shebang! In 2010, she...
