12 Songs, 29 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Though they play it cool, like just another solid gutsy punk-pop band, Upset features Best Coast and Vivian Girls’ Ali Koehler, La Sera’s lead guitarist Jennifer Prince, and Hole’s Patty Schemel on drums. At times Upset sound much like the bands the members are from—and other times show what those bands are missing. Upset’s debut album, She’s Gone, is a straightforward and tuneful batch of buzzing punk-pop where the songwriting always leads with endearing harmonies and/or determined lead vocals. “Queen Frosteen” plays up the band's sweet side as the lyrics stick in the knife, while “About Me” puts the power move right up front in the tough lead vocals. Their Ramones roots bounce up for Prince’s “Game Over.” The nearly four-minute “Phone Calls” shifts the vibe to overcast. With 12 songs in less than 30 minutes (recorded primarily at Koehler’s house by Kyle Gilbride of Swearin’), She’s Gone smacks of the joy and immediacy that can only be caught when a band's still in the throes of its honeymoon period.

About Upset

The punk-pop band Upset began as the project of Ali Koehler, the former drummer for Vivian Girls and Best Coast. After leaving the latter band late in 2011, Koehler took some time to regroup and write some songs; after noticing that ex-Hole drummer Patty Schemel was following her on Twitter, she struck up a friendship that turned into a musical collaboration. With Koehler on guitar and vocals, she and Schemel rounded out their lineup with Koehler's Vivian Girls bandmate (and La Sera founder) Katy Goodman on bass and La Sera's Jenn Prince on guitar. The band played its first show in January 2013, opening for Parquet Courts at the L.A. venue The Echo. When it came time to record their debut album, Upset worked with Kyle Gilbride (Swearin'). The results, She's Gone, were released by Don Giovanni late in 2013. After Prince's departure, guitarist Lauren Freeman (also of Benny the Jet Rodriguez) and Slutever bassist Rachel Gagliardi joined the band. This version of Upset worked with punk veteran Todd Congelliere on the '76 EP, which Lauren Records issued in 2015.~ Heather Phares
