iTunes Editors’ Notes

That Matchbox Twenty has only released three official studio albums hasn’t discouraged the group from stacking up platinum plaques, with enough singles to fill a 2007 greatest hits collection (Exile on Mainstream) and be anointed one of the most popular bands of the late ‘90s/early ‘00s. North is its first new studio album in 10 years, written in a house in Nashville. Rob Thomas and company continue MB20’s legacy of charged pop, lyrical and melodic contraptions, and solid hooks.

Disappointing Mostly

One of the great things about Matchbox Twenty, and even some of the Rob Thomas solo work, was that though it always had some pop elements flowing through it, the music always felt grounded and emotional. It had a big heart and the sound would sort of belie that. This is not the MB20 that I know, nor is it one I necessarily care too. The music is way to produced, lacking in emotional substance and too far from the very thing that has always made their music great. This is sort of a move toward the "everyday pop" that coasts its way through top 40 radio like candy too sweet to eat more than once or twice. From lyrics to music, this is really just disappointing. The one song that is at least listenable because, despite its simpleness and pandering to a lower denominator, is "She's So Mean". Yeah, lyrics are trite and silly for the most part, but at the least the music has a pulse. The rest of the album is pretty empty and pretty soulless which is a huge disappointment from one of my favorite bands

They've Done It Again

Absolutely. Amazing.

Not what I expected!

Long time Matchbox Twenty fan here. This album turned out completely different than I expected! If you're looking for the old mb20 you won't find it here. They've evolved. It's fresh. I like it.

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Upon the release of their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, in fall 1996, Matchbox Twenty was pigeonholed as one of the legions of post-grunge guitar bands that roamed the American pop scene in the middle of that decade. As their first single, "Push," climbed the charts, it was widely assumed (at least by cynical critics) that they were a one-hit wonder, but Yourself or Someone Like You continued to spin off singles well into 1998. By that time, the group's blend of '70s arena rock and early-'90s...
