About The Chartbusters
Under the nominal leadership of tenor and soprano saxophonist Craig Handy, this group achieved a measure of distinction owing to a small number of well-conceived and implemented albums. The first, 1995’s Chartbusters! Volume 1, was an engaging homage to Blue Note Records but because it appeared only on a small independent label its qualities were heard by only a few. The follow-up set also paid tribute to a record company, or rather its roster of recording artists; this time it was Prestige Records, who also released the album. Other members of the band include Donald Harrison, Lonnie Smith, and Idris Muhammad with the added horn of Randy Brecker and David Fiuczynski’s guitar on Mating Call. The concept calls for music to be played that is associated with and in some instances written by musicians who were recorded on the cited labels. Thus, the music that is heard reflects artists such as Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Tadd Dameron, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Jackie McLean, and Sonny Rollins. The band does not attempt to impersonate or recreate; the music is the starting point, what they do with it is the result of their inspiration and improvisational skills. The results so far have been very good, fluent post-bop music.
