iTunes Editors’ Notes

Mainstays and arguably architects of the now unmistakable Memphis Hip-Hop sound, 8Ball and MJG have been releasing razor sharp street oriented Hip-Hop for the better part of two decades. Like their contemporaries Three Six Mafia, 8Ball and MJG are both enviably consistent and intimidatingly prolific, making it difficult for neophytes to get an accurate picture of the group’s rich and complex history. The release of the aptly titled We Are The South does much to remedy that problem, assembling the best of the group’s pre Bad Boy work on a sleek sixteen-track compilation. Though their very earliest, bounce based work is missing, We Are The South does an admirable job at compiling the best tracks from seminal albums like Comin’ Out Hard, and On Top of The World. Though some of this material may be unfamiliar to New York-centric listeners, tracks like the brooding “Friend or Foe” and the Organized Noise-produced masterpiece “Don’t Flex” set the southern Hip-Hop community ablaze upon their initial release, and have lost none of their considerable power with the passage of time.

Like Whoa!!

2, 5, 6, 9 should be on here twice, WTF!! 1 briefly explains what has been happening for the past 15 years in their neighborhood of Orange Mound and the whole city of Memphis and why Chapter 1 is titled Coming Out Hard. If you have been On the Outside Looking in you may not know that. But if you have riding since day one you already know that. 3, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 are great songs don't get me wrong but there are 7 other tracks, i.e. Crumbs to Bricks, that need to be on this album. And what the french toast did they do to the hardest 8Ball & MJG track ever made, Lay It Down, Lay It Down!! You #o3$ Lay It Down!

One of the greates duo's ever ...

8ball and MJG paved they way out of memphis for rap music ... they never were utilized right by producers. I don't think all of these tracks should have been on this, but SPACE AGE PIMPIN' is a classic.

Thank god for "Orange Mound"

One of the true pioneers of southern hip-hop/rap who have paved the way for many of the groups we hear today and bringing the city of Memphis to our ears. With their killer flow and mad beats this collection is a must for the "true" hip-hop/rap fan.

8Ball, half of the pioneering Southern rap duo 8Ball & MJG, branched out occasionally for solo albums, beginning with the double-disc Lost in 1998, and was an active collaborator, appearing as a featured guest on countless rap songs over the years. Born Premro Smith, 8Ball grew up in the Orange Mound area of Memphis, TN, where he met MJG at Ridgeway Junior High School in 1984. The two shared a passion for hip-hop, which hadn't yet made a strong impact in the South, and formed their own rap duo,...
