iTunes Review

While not as celebrated as his epochal Superfly, the 1977 Short Eyes is another masterful display of Curtis Mayfield’s gifts applied to movie soundtracking. The story of an imprisoned pedophile allows his empathy to shine; the simple observation that “I’m a young dude, but my whole life is almost gone” from “Back Against the Wall” is hard not to feel, especially as presented in the track’s mix of Impressions-style vocalizing and post-Hendrix guitar soloing. “Short Eyes/Freak, Freak, Free, Free, Free,” by constrast, is a warning for children to watch out for predators. The soft soul contours of that cut, “A Heavy Dude” and much of the rest couch humanistic messages while not shying from harder realities. Short Eyes remains the sort of album that might convert casual Mayfield fans into deeper appreciators.

I Have "BIG EYES" for this record!

Curtis Mayfield has to be one of my favorite musicians. PERIOD. He has had a few misses, but his catalog is impressive as h@ll! "Do Do Wap is Strong In Here" should win an award for the funkiest cut on EARTH. "Back Against The Wall" is a funked out smooth jem. I have never seen the movie the record is based on, I've heard some great things about it! But if its anything like this record, I might have a new favorite movie!

Amazing

It's crazy how good this soundtrack is. After the wild success of SuperFly the label invested heavily in the release of this LP - sadly it did not sell well, but the music, in my opinion, eclipses what Curtis did on SuperFly - this is simply that good. Try to find the vinyl if you can, and if not get it here.

Perhaps because he didn't cross over to the pop audience as heavily as Motown's stars, it may be that the scope of Curtis Mayfield's talents and contributions have yet to be fully recognized. Judged merely by his records alone, the man's legacy is enormous. As the leader of the Impressions, he recorded some of the finest soul vocal group music of the 1960s. As a solo artist in the 1970s, he helped pioneer funk and helped introduce hard-hitting urban commentary into soul music. "Gypsy Woman," "It's...
