The five stars

is for the Gann piece. All the rest deserve a two star. The performances have a lot to be desired. This is especially true in the Reich and Adams pieces. Short Ride falls apart quickley altough the wind arraingment is the hardest of the two. I'm still baffled why they chose to program the fanfare last. In C and Worker's Union fare much better although the BOAC Workers is still the one to get. The crown jewel however has to be the Gann "Sunken City". They pour their all into the work and as well they should, it deserves a pulitzer. Kyle Gann has written one of the three or four best piano concertos in the last 50 years. It's a meditation on New Orleans before and after Katrina. It captures both the joy and sorrow of the city and how the recent events have shaped it's future. This work should be played in every city in America, it's that good. -Bz

The five stars

is for this CD. The Orkest de Volharding may occasionally lack a touch of precision, but they never want for verve or energy. This CD is an excellent demonstration of an ensemble bringing their characteristic sound to some quality literature- I found their read of Short Ride to be tons of fun...the extra hair on its chest only helps the tune.
