A Splendid Whiff

This first in Mariinski label releases shows Maestro Gergiev at his energetic best, and leaves one hoping that superb recordings from the new Concert Hall will abound. Perhaps an odd choice for an initial outing, but really a fun selection with lots of thrilling highs and an injection of folk and atonal elements. Based on Gogol's story of a nose that "runs" off on its owner, then appears around St. Petersburg dressed as a pomp official, rejecting its owner's pleas, it is a fun tale. Even now, it may jab at new money and those who have left us in a global economic mess. Musically, it is a wild ride, and only Valery Gergiev could take us along on this roller coaster. Of special note, the production values are superb, and hats off to the engineers for capturing perfect sound in one of the world's greatest new venues. Let that Nose run!
