Customer Reviews

A nice cross-section of a versatile band...

"The Best of Sugar Ray" is like an old friend you might not have spoken with in weeks...months...years... And, yet, when you finally run into that old friend, you're delighted to discover that nothing has changed. Your relationship is as sharp, healthy, and enjoyable as ever... If you've walked by a radio sometime in the past decade or so, then you will probably recognize a good 5, 6, or 7 of these songs already. So, it's already a relatively safe investment... But, the new or lesser known tracks are noteworthy selections in their own right. The concert fave "Mean Machine" harkens back to their harder rock days, while the new single "Shot of Laughter" is a traditional Sugar Ray tune in the vein of "Someday" and "Every Morning" (perfect for summer lethargy). "Chasin' You Around" is a lofty, feel-good excursion from their 2003 "ITPOL" album that deserves a second chance at life... Then, of course, there is the summer anthem "Under the Sun", a song that, amazingly, has evaded radio play thus far. The plan is simple, but ingenious. Lure people in with the hits...then clobber 'em with a showing of depth and versatility that few people knew Sugar Ray had. Diabolical. In spite of its omissions ("Mr. Bartender", "Iron Mic", "Waiting") this is a great start for people wanting to learn about Sugar Ray's career.

What happened to music like this?

Great album...Will someone tell me what happened to decent music like this? This is music. Nothing more, nothing less. Great songs to hang out and listen to. These days we have Paris Hilton singing, and other wannabe computer edited people.

Sounds of Summer

For years now Sugar Ray has been my "Summer Soundtrack." I listen to them the first and last days of summer, and every time I go to the beach. I will only listen to them in the summer, just to keep with tradition. I love picking up the album and listening to the upbeat tracks (My favorite being "under the sun"). To any Sugar Ray fan, or even someone just looking for some upbeat songs, this CD would be perfect.

Formed: 1992 in Newport Beach, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Belying their origins as a raucous funk metal band, Sugar Ray created several of the most breezily infectious summer singles of the late '90s, hitting on an appealing combination of sunny pop, lightly funky hip-hop grooves, and reggae lilt. Pegged as likely one-hit wonders after their 1997 breakthrough smash "Fly," Sugar Ray managed to maintain their career momentum far longer than many observers expected, aided in no small part by the pinup-worthy looks of lead singer Mark McGrath. Of course, it...
