Editors’ Notes

Sporting a feathery blonde mullet and a bolo tie, a boyish, grinning Keith poses bashfully for the camera: Fans who discovered Toby Keith through “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” might be surprised by the portrait adorning the cover of his 1993 debut. Even if that image doesn’t quite square with the macho persona that Keith would later develop, the music on Toby Keith displays the singer’s conviction and talent for solidly built songs. “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action” bear the influence of Southern roots-rock, particularly John Mellancamp and the Georgia Satellites. At this stage in his career, Keith’s style fell somewhere between the throaty conviction of Ronnie Milsap and the good ol’ boy charm of Hank Williams Jr. Of course, there was one thing that set Keith firmly apart from other up-and-coming Nashville stars: He wrote almost all his own material. “He Ain’t Worth Missing,” “Wish I Didn’t Know Now” and “Close But No Guitar” show Keith’s distinctive songwriting imprint. His songs have an easy way about them, but it’s the honesty that makes the clever lines stick.

Excellent!

This is one of the greatest country albums to ever be released. Although the first track, "Should've Been a Cowboy" is amazing, I also found the others to be equally enjoyable. This is the only album that I've ever bought where I have liked every song. Here is a rundown of all the songs, on a scale of 1-10. 1. Should've Been a Cowboy - 10/10 - One of the best Toby songs of all time, enough said. 2. He Ain't Worth Missing - 9/10 - Another classic, it's amazing how Toby's debut album is this great 3. Under the Fall - 8/10 - Great song, great beat. 4. Some Kinda Good Kinda Hold on Me - 7/10 - Good song, not my favorite, but still great! 5. Wish I Didn't Know Now - 10/10 - Amazing song, amazing lyrics, amazing tune. 6. Ain't No Thang - 6/10 - My least favorite song on the album, but it's not horrible. I don't skip over it when I play this album, like I need to with many albums. 7. Valentine - 10/10 - My favorite song on the album. I think it is the most underrated song Keith has ever written. 8. A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action - 10/10 - Makes you want to get up and dance, great! 9. Mama Come Quick - 10/10 - My second favorite song on the album, I love the topic. 10. Close But No Guitar - 9/10 - Shows Toby's great sense of humor, that's what I like about this song. I can't stop laughing when I hear him repeating, "flat-top, guitar-pickin' friend o' mine"! Overall, this is my second favorite Toby album, only Shock'n Y'all compares. Great music by a consistently wonderful artist.

Biography

Born: July 8, 1961 in Clinton, OK

Genre: Country

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Toby Keith spent the '90s as a solid, workmanlike country star who met with considerable chart success, yet never quite broke free of the neo-traditionalist pack to become a household name like Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson. That all changed in 2002 when he recorded "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," a response to September 11 that became one of country's most highly charged political statements since Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee." The media furor ensured that even...
