iTunes Review

For its first album in four years, Gov’t Mule includes two versions of each song; the secondary tunes feature guest vocalists ranging from Elvis Costello to Grace Potter. These guests let us hear the band in contexts no one would imagine. The results do vary in ways that makes it a good thing those versions come later, though Dr. John’s version of “Stoop So Long” is an obvious keeper. The true draw here remains Gov’t Mule and the peerless musicianship of guitarist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, and bassist Jorgen Carlsson, with keyboardist Danny Louis coloring in the spaces. “Whisper in Your Soul” plows forward with the expected muscular, earth-shaking attack, while the nine-minute “Captured” is both a soulful blues with plenty of room to roam and an impressive showcase for Haynes’ guitarwork. “Funny Little Tragedy” steps up the pace considerably for a compact pop tune. (Elvis Costello’s version is the youngest he’s sounded in years.) Recorded in Los Angeles and Stamford, Conn., Shout! nails down what it means to be Gov’t Mule.

Well done, Mule! Well done!

It's hard to name many bands that just get better with each consequent release, but Gov't Mule is an exception. These guys are some of the hardest working and finest sounding musicians around and from start to finish, Shout! is easily one of the Mule's best. Listen to tracks 'World Boss' and "Captured' and you will quickly find yourself buying the entire album. Not to mention the bonus disc with guest vocals such as: Elvis Costello, Jim James, Dave Matthews, and Ben Harper. Outstanding!!

Warren is like a fine wine, people. THIS is how it's done. His best work yet and no slowing down in sight for the hardest working, most skilled brother in the business.

Phenomenal Release

This is an incredible album -- both lyrically and musically. As a fan I was a little apprehensive at first, but this album is worth every cent. The interpretations by the guest artists morph the songs into new terrain. Warren and the boys have really outdone themselves this time. In my opinion, "Bring on the Music" is the best song they have ever written. Listen to the words and you will understand what I am talking about.

The original leaders of Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, were well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock's most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project Gov't Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers' influence was apparent...
