This recording changes the way I think about Sibelius. Too many times, conductors get bogged down and it ends up sounding like bad Mahler. Vanska gives these two works a lightness and direction that you rarely see in Sibelius. There's almost a nod to Bruckner and Haydn in the first movement of the 2nd--Vanska pushes through horizontally where a lot of other conductors take time to admire the vertical harmony. The interpretation is similar to Vanska's earlier recording, but this time with a much better orchestra--bravo!
Once this recording cycle is complete, there will be no need for another conductor to ever pick up the score to a Sibelius symphony while in a recording session. The combination of Osmo Vanska with the Minnesota Orchestra is a match made in Heaven for the music of Sibelius. His interpretations are powerful, lush, yet not too romantic. If you already own his cycle recorded while in Finland, this isn't a must-have purchase, but if you're looking to buy your first recordings of these Scandinavian masterpieces, then start here!
Simply the finest! A must own for any classical music lover!
