Album Review

Although this set contains eight lesser-known Chick Corea compositions, it is in reality a fine blowing date. Corea, on both acoustic and electric pianos, is joined by his old friend Joe Farrell on reeds, bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Steve Gadd for some fine straightahead jazz.

Another Chick great...

As is the case with all of Chick Corea's records, "Friends" sounds years ahead of its time. Upon my first listening I thought it was recording in the early new century, between 2001-2003 or so. Eddie Gomez is the usual rock on acoustic bass, as is Steve Gadd on drums, a perpetual powerhouse whose time, feel, and prowess is virtually unmatched. I don't know the reeds player that well, but he definitely presents some hard bop lines and some of his own ideas over the ever-innovative Chick tunes. As is the usual with Chick Corea, this is a must-listen.

A Classic

I'm not sure how it would sound if I was listening for the first time, but these songs are absolute classics that still sound fresh. If you're a Chick fan, but haven't heard this one, it's worth taking the time to get to know this music. The writing is beautiful, and melodic, and there is a sort of risk taking that seems very rare these days. Of course it doesn't hurt that these are some of the finest players on their instruments at the prime of their creativity.

I just love this album, start to finish. This for me plays like the rock concept album, where the music takes you on a journey. I was studying at Berklee in Boston when this came out and it kept me sane and my music fresh. Classic Chick.

Chick Corea has been one of the most significant jazzmen since the '60s. Not content at any time to rest on his laurels, he has been involved in quite a few important musical projects, and his musical curiosity has never dimmed. A masterful pianist who, along with Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett, was one of the top stylists to emerge after Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner, Corea is also one of the few electric keyboardists to be quite individual and recognizable on synthesizers. In addition, he has composed...
