iTunes Editors’ Notes

The Salem working the levers behind the curtain of this particular recording hail from Michigan (they’re not the Danish rock band, the Israeli metal heads, nor the Swedish pop artist), and sculpt dark, shuddering, pulsating, masses of sound. Some fans excitedly proclaim Salem as purveyors of the newest New Thing (they even have their own new genre tag: “witch,” or “witch house” — did someone say “ghoul-step?”), but newcomers might keep fiddling with the volume in an effort to clean up the trebly sludge. The underlying layer of grit and fuzz provides a bed for brittle electronic percussion and keening synthesizers; in the title track’s case, it also underlies the surprising interjection of an airy chorus singing “O Holy Night.” There are flutters of conga drums, sparking metal hammers, tranced-out vocal mutterings, and grainy, muffled laughter; corroded vocals are slowed and distorted, or drawl Southern rap. The single “Frost” is chilling and beautiful with its glitchy stuttering, vaporous vocals and warped, glacial synths. King Night is indeed a New Thing, and a compelling one at that.

Sweden

This is a good example of how far behind America is with the rest of the world when it comes to taste in Music. Salem here was nominated for about seven Swedish Grammys and had the number one record for quite awhile over there. This will never fly in America…It might…but I highly doubt it. It is a good example of a sound that Lady Ga Ga, Eminem, Rihana and a handful of other pop divas will be trying out for about the next three years. I really dig it. I can go without the rap, because I think that delivery style is a bit played out, Tupac was doing it 15 years ago, but I do like how they distorted the living daylights out of it and it more less becomes part of the whole mix to a degree that gives it almost a sarcastic quality in which the vocals' clarity is of little importance. I love Frost. That is one hot track.

Blast this song. Feel the sound waves. You'll love it.

Where did these guys come from?

This is one of the most innovative albums that has come out in the past 5 years. If these guys dont win some kind of award for this album, then there is no truth. Wait, we live in a world that loves Lady Gaga, of course these guys wont win anything because their music is top notch. GO SALEM!!!

Biography

Formed: 2002 in Gainesville, FL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

After As Friends Rust dissolved in early 2002, guitarist Joe Simmons and bassist Tom Rankine formed Salem with drummer David Miller, guitarist Jeremy Robertson, and vocalist Adam D'Zurilla. At first, the Gainesville, FL-based combo was simply a retooled version of AFR, since that unit still had tour responsibilities to fulfill. But with the official name change to Salem, the group began to gel around a batch of new songs and the emotive vocals of D'Zurilla. Tours throughout the emo/punk revivalist...
