iTunes Review

From its hairdo-inspired title on down, this quirky quartet's second album embodies the exuberant, party-at-its-peak spirit of Hairspray. Stax soul, '60s pop hooks, and Motown momentum drive singing human dynamo Rachael Price and her super-tight, conservatory-trained crew. "Godawful Things" kicks things off with a bang, and the album only heats up from there. "Spectacular Failure" nails a lackluster lothario with pitiless humor, "Call Off Your Dogs" balances tricky time signatures with effortless vocal harmonies, and the bluesy kiss-off "I Don't Care About You" is delivered with tuneful finality.

Pre-Oredered, Pre-loved

Having 1st seen Lake Street Dive in the "Another Day Another Time" documentary, I instantly fell in love with both the talents of the members and the beauty of the songwriting. Now that I have seen them live twice, they reign in a select gropu of my "top bands" I got to see them perform "Call Off Your Dogs" live on 11/7/15 in San Luis Obispo.... They just keep bringing it...Thank you LAKE STREET DIVE

Just keeps getting better

For those who still love real music made with real instruments and not some touch pad and computer Lake Street Dive is for you. The unique voice of Rachael Price, which captivates a crowd in seconds (I've seen it in person three times now), combined with the trumpet and guitar skills of Mike Olson, rhythm and style of Mike Calabrese on drums, and last, but certainly not least, one of the best and most talented bassist of her time, Bridget Kearney, makes soulful music that brings you back to the good ole days. (They also put on one heck of a show live.) I was sold at their first album, Lake Street Dive, fell in love at their second album, Bad Self Portraits, and will most likely reach nirvana once all of Side Pony hits my ears. If you have to get into one new band in 2016 make it Lake Street Dive and jam out to some of the best music coming out this day in age.

Bringing good music back

These people are ridiculously talented. And, not only are they all extremely talented, they are the epitome of a great, united band. Even though Rachael Price seems to steal the show with her unmatched vocal ability, the band as a whole combines for the songwriting aspect, with their killer bassist, Bridget Kearney, taking most of the lead in that area. Along with their vocal and songwriting prowess, Mike Calabrese provides tasteful drumming combined with great harmonies that sugar coat Lake Street Dive’s vocals and Mike Olson’s sultry trumpet/guitar expertise. This band is absolutely ridiculous, and this CD will be nothing short of that. I’m very excited to see how far they can go with a record label that is able to promote them. Buy this CD!

Biography

Formed: 2004 in Boston, MA

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Boston's Lake Street Dive are a fascinating blend of influences and complexity: jazz at heart, with an alternative D.I.Y. sensibility and a passion for classic rock and garage aesthetics. The band, comprised of singer Rachael Price, drummer Mike Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, and trumpet-playing guitarist Mike "McDuck" Olson, first met and formed at Boston's New England Conservatory. The initial idea was to be a kind of free jazz country band, playing country songs in an avant-garde style, but...
