Woodstock - EP

There’s no better way to judge a singer than to hear her live. This Woodstock EP is exactly that. In a studio near her Woodstock, N.Y., home, Danielia Cotton gathered a small band to cut these six songs live in a room. Four songs were featured on the singer/guitarist’s 2012 album The Gun in Your Hand, while a cover of Citizen Cope’s “Sideways” and a new original song, “Mountain Church Road,” complete the lineup. Cotton shares the spotlight with her longtime collaborator, producer and guitarist Kevin Salem, who’s known for producing and/or accompanying Dumptruck, Mercury Rev, Lenka, Bad Brains, and Rachel Yamagata. Joining Salem is drummer John Clancy, Rob Clores, and Jeff Keithline. The obvious center of attention here is Cotton’s stirring voice, which brings power and pathos to the blues rock of “Save Me” and “Deep Dark Love” and intimacy to the ballads “Sideways” and “Mountain Church Road.” The latter, written to her mother, is named after the street she grew up on in Hopewell, N.J., and expresses Cotton’s heartfelt struggle with growing up in a difficult environment.
