The 2012 EP by Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen, Silent Hour/Golden Mile, features material intended for the next Grizzly Bear album. It's a refocus for Rossen, centering on the emotive and artsy underpinnings that made the Bear's earliest material so engrossing. Always in danger of being overdone by ornate musicianship, Rossen's songs are here kept to a minimum of fuss (by his standards). The overpronounced bass guitar of "Up on High" adds to the attractively askew arrangement, which also features orchestration that's kept tidily in the background. "Silent Song" adds slide guitar pinched from the George Harrison school, while "Golden Mile" goes a stretch further in evoking the ex-Beatle's solo work, with a vocal and arrangement that could place it on All Things Must Pass. "Saint Nothing" is curiously reminiscent of Harrison's bandmate Paul McCartney, with a piano ballad that sounds like a lost early-'70s deep album cut. Despite these obvious reference points, Rossen is a distinct individual who's arguably at his best on his own.
A timeless sound in a fleeting musical culture
Rossen, who is better known as 1/4 of Grizzly Bear and 1/2 of Dept. of Eagles, takes a (short) break from band-life to get intimate with his listeners. Daniel is known for being somewhat of a recluse and openly admits to finding more pleasure in solitude. This is not what you'll find in Silent Hour/ Golden Mile. He is personal in his exploration with a well-polished sound that is not hidden beneath a gloss of reverb or effects. He has tried and true song-writing structures but with poetic imagery and a neo-classical sound that are extraordinary (in the literal sense of the word). As a practiced classical and jazz guitarist and theorist, Rossen's musical progression is steeped in complicated chords and melodic paths that are often unnatural in pop music but are not distracting and fit rather comfortably in this sonic infrastructure that Rossen has crafted. Must Listen, A+.
Daniel, you are an amazing man. please keep writing music. forever and ever and ever.
This album is a cold, pretty diamond. Its only fault is it's too short. It's the best thing you can do with four bucks today, so stop reading this and buy it already!
