Album Review

Michael Martin Murphey's second Christmas album, subtitled "Cowboy Christmas II," is, as its title declares, a record of carols played on acoustic instruments. The titles all come from the 19th century or earlier, among them such favorites as "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World," and Murphey's arrangements usually feature his own finger-picked guitar, frequently accompanied by John McEuen on banjo or mandolin, or Paul Sadler on hammer dulcimer, over which he sings solemnly in his slightly wheezy tenor. Things get a bit livelier when Murphey's sons Ryan and Brennan trade blues guitar licks on "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and when daughter Laura duets on "Silent Night." But this is a spare and reverent Christmas album, appropriate for a rustic celebration in a Western church.

I do not write often about music and am not a critic but I felt that this LP was apart from any other Christmas LP I have ever heard
Michael Martin Murphy's Acoustic Christmas Carol is a very special album.
The songs are recorded perfectly for people that have a deep abiding love for
acoustic music. Each song represents the true meaning of Christmas. I do enjoy hearing the original music the way it is meant to be played.

A guitarist/songwriter, Murphey led the country-rock group the Lewis & Clarke Expedition in the mid- to late '60s and had some pop success, and even got one song, "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?," recorded by the Monkees (with Nesmith singing lead, natch). His songs were cut by the likes...
