iTunes Review

Having met in 2010 during an appearance on the radio program A Prairie Home Companion, where they performed Duke Ellington's "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good," jazz pianist Dick Hyman and singer Heather Masse (of the Canadian folk trio The Wailin' Jennys) took things a step further. Here, they recorded a collection of standards from the Great American Songbook. Two Masse originals—"If I Called You" and "Morning Drinker"—are pleasant songs that fit the style and mood of the classics, even if they're unlikely to challenge the works of George & Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weill, or Lorenz Hart & Richard Rodgers. With more than 60 years of performing behind him, Hyman has proven himself a true authority on the songs presented here. Folks searching for music for a candlelight dinner surely won't go wrong choosing this piano-and-voice collection that stays true to the originals.

So good you can hear why an old pro like "Dick Hyman "makes his piano sing and dance for Miss" Heather Massey," a new comer to some ,with an old soul. She has the courage to sing these old standards , and make them her own. Dick could be backing a Sinatra session here, but it's Heather who shines on this remarkable pairing of two major talents. Can't wait for Jonathyn Swartz to start playing this on his show. I'm sure he will love it, as I love I do.

I've been waiting for this album for years!

And I'm so glad it's finally here. I've heard many of these standards thousands of times, but listening Heather Masse sing them makes me smile. Listen to her sing September Song with a good pair of headphones - if you are like me, it will give you chills.

WOW! I've really loved the rich voice of Heather Masse on the Waylin' Jennys albums, but teaming up with Dick Hymen was a stroke of genius. Mr. Hyman really retains the truth of these American Songbook originals, but in his own brilliant way. I have listened to this album about ten times in the last few days and every time, it's as fresh as the first listen. So good!
