Album Review

An R&B oldies show with a difference, the artists represented the cream of the crop of jump blues, and in 1970, they were still in fine form. The disc stars Otis, Esther Phillips, Eddie Vinson, Joe Turner, Ivory Joe Hunter, Roy Milton, Roy Brown, Pee Wee Crayton, and Johnny's guitar wielding son, Shuggie.

An r&b necessity

This should be considered one of the great live albums of all time. It's every bit as good as "Waiting for Columbus." The album is full of hard core rhythm & blues greats who know how to perform and grab an audience. The playing is top notch, the performances inspired and the sound quality superb. Even the original vinyl sounded superior to most other recordings from the early to mid 70's. You can see some of the performances in the movie "Play Misty for Me," in the scene where the Clint Eastwood character goes to the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival. These people are playing in the background. Shuggie Otis was 16 at the time and was still developing as a blues guitarist, but he does his father proud on a couple of the songs. Big Joe Turner, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and Little Esther Phillips stand out, as do all the musicians. Every blues/rhythm & blues fans needs this.

Johnny Otis's BEST and it's LIVE

I have the vinyl album purchased in 1973, great stuff! A live setting of some of blue's best, Johnny is still going today as well a most artist on the album. If your a blues fan this is a must! Try it you'll like it.

Johnny Otis modeled an amazing number of contrasting musical hats over a career spanning more than half a century. Bandleader, record producer, talent scout, label owner, nightclub impresario, disc jockey, TV variety show host, author, R&B pioneer, rock & roll star -- Otis answered to all those descriptions and quite a few more. Not bad for a Greek-American who loved jazz and R&B so fervently that he adopted the African-American culture as his own. California-born John Veliotes changed his name...
