Album Review

Looking at sin as an addiction and seeing the seven-step recovery program as a path to God, Christian rapper Swoope gets conceptual on his sophomore release, and all the ambition does him good. Sinema isn't an overwritten album, even when the rapper has been busier with his pen, filling this story of empty success and forgotten friends with long verses and less hooky choruses. Still, standout numbers like "LSD" — which stands for love, sex, death — stick to the bones more than the songs on his debut, while "Before Goodnight" is one of the most complex songs in the man's songbook, and also one of his best. Check "Beauty and the Beast " for that debut album excitement, then get ready to gasp at the rest while dropping an occasional "my, how he's grown." Tedashii, Christon Gray, Sho Baraka, and other fine guests contribute to this movie on wax/CD/digital whatnot.

Customer Reviews

From 'the zoo' to 'wake up' Swoope has used synced crossover lyrics from reality and fantasy. Now with 'sinema' he has done it again by using the fantasy and mystery of 'sin in me' and the 'best of me' tracks as examples of how pride, criticism, lust, etc. play out in our life and ends 'fix my heart.'

A Good album! Great content, but wasn't feeling the production! Sorry man! But 5 stars for the message

I am a die hard Swoope fan. So, I am going to keep it 100 for those who are reading this review trying to decide whether or not they should cop this album. This album is made by a different Swoope. Now, what I mean by "different" is that Swoope focuses on a different part of his life in this one. If you're expecting an album just as hard-hitting as his last, which was entitled "Wake Up", you will sadly mistaken. You have to delete all expectations when trying to bump to this one. The beats do not knock, and aren't memorable, but I don't think that was Swoope's focus. The album revolves around Swoope's everlasting battle with temptation and lust, which should be relatable to most of us, but due to the delivery, the album can fall short on that factor of relation.

I wanted this album to be fire and I EXPECTED it to be just as good as wake up. Due to my high expectations, I was sadly disappointed.

Listen to this album with zero expectation. Maybe if I didn't know who Swoope was, I would be feeling this. I just don't know...
