Album Review

Night Ranger's second album Midnight Madness may not have been as consistent as their debut, but it did spawn the band's biggest hit, "Sister Christian." While it served as their commercial breakthrough, the infamous power ballad also relegated the group to "one-hit wonder" status while fueling their reputation as being "too soft" for a metal band. But as can be seen by the album's frenetic opener "(You can Still) Rock in America," Night Ranger actually rocked as hard as any of their pop-metal contemporaries, and Midnight Madness offers a number of memorable melodic rockers like "Rumours in the Air," "When You Close Your Eyes," and "Why Does Love Have to Change" as well.

Customer Reviews

Still good rock

Several songs make this album worth a listen: You Can Still Rock in America, Rumours in the Air, Sister Christian, Chipping Away, and When You Close Your Eyes. If you like straight forward rock, nothing tricky, then Night Ranger is a good choice. Their songs are melodic, easy to sing and listen to, and straight forward.

Rock On

Every song on this album rocks. I bought it my junior year in high school and it holds alot of memories. It was released in 1983. I recommend this to everyone who loves classic rock.

Get Over Yourself - It's Still Fun

Ya, I was a teen in the early 80's. Ya, I had this tape - wanna make something of it? Seriously, I still rather like a few songs on this, if only for the chord structures. 'Rumours' is a great song, IMO, and 'When You Close Your Eyes' had a memorable video. Everyone loves 'Sister Christian', so that makes 3 trax worth listening to. Now, be honest -- how many albums do you have at home that you bought for ONE lousy song? Buy the album, don't buy the album. If you allow yourself to go back in time and immerse yourself, it's fun.

The group formed in the early '80s in San Francisco; in addition to Gillis and Fitzgerald, the members included Jack Blades (vocals, bass), Jeff Watson (guitar), and Kelly Keagy (drums). After a few local gigs, promoter Bill Graham managed to get them supporting slots on Judas Priest, Santana, and Doobie Brothers concerts....
