Album Review

On his fourth album as a leader, French horn player John Clark showcases his talents as a composer and arranger for a rotating ensemble of up to eleven musicians, including Alex Foster on saxophone, Ryo Kawasaki on guitar, and Howard Johnson on bass clarinet. The eclectic lineup works its way through five Clark originals and three standards, including a rousing large group take on John Coltrane's "India," which opens, appropriately enough, with a sitar. Clark's compositions range from freely improvised duos and trios to more intricately orchestrated pieces for larger groups. The ensemble playing throughout the album is always interesting and frequently inspired.

John Clark's I Will

Innovative and happy jazz by jazz french hornist John Clark tapping other diverse interests and strong arranging. The title, inspired by a prayer by Abdu'l Baha represents an affirmation of our capacity to rise above the mire and to be happy. The music here flows with this spirit.

First Call

For a long time John Clark was the singing french horn--a kind of sonic anchor--in the sometimes wild, anything-goes later bands of Gil Evans.
It makes sense, since Evans had an uncanny ability to quickly find the best young talent on any particular instrument--especially a musician
who could adjust to various genres & styles. Clark has truly been "first call" for many other bands as well, but "I Will" gives him,
under the best recording conditions, a chance to showcase his own compositions & musical ideas. It's a pleasure to hear his playing--
such a mellow, yet tough & articulate voice--in the spotlight on this terrific album.
