Album Review

Los Angeles Joy Division-obsessed duo She Wants Revenge blend electronic beats with goth pop misery on their self-titled Geffen debut. DJs Justin Warfield and Adam "Adam 12" Bravin may have crafted the post-punk equivalent of XTC alter-egos Dukes of Stratosphear's psychedelic rock tribute Chips from the Chocolate Fireball, but there is suspicion as to whether or not it was intentional. Like fellow reanimators Interpol, the Bravery, or even the mysterious Lansing-Dreiden, She Wants Revenge love early Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, and pre-Land of Rape and Honey Ministry, but what makes their impeccably crafted, highly listenable/danceable collection of angst so dubious is its utter duplicity. There's nothing wrong with honoring your influences by copping a few moves and singing in a fake British accent like Green Day with the intentions of updating a genre that many potential listeners are too young to have experienced first-hand, but it's another thing to do it without even the slightest deviation. I am truly happy not everyone likes this

Get it for yourself listen for yourself. I think it's great so great in fact that I am thrilled that a lot of people seem to not like it. I don't need to hear it being played in the supermarket while I am shopping for a giftcard for my Father. It's dark pop, that's how I would describe it, and I think it's going to be a crossover band for a lot of people who probably don't like bands that have been big influences on these guys.

Good album.

For those of you who thinks this band is ripping off Interpol, get a clue. Interpol has been borrowing/stealing from the likes of Bauhaus and Joy Division the whole time. Interpol has never been an original anything - that however doesn't mean they aren't good. She Wants Revenge obviously draws from similar post punk influences along with other influences such as Human League and Gary Numan. I recommend giving Sister a listen, good song. I would say this could be a very strong contender in 06.

If Creativity doesn't matter...

then buy this. Some of the worst lyrics ive ever heard. Furthermore, the lead singer is one of the most self-involved unimaginative wannabe rock stars ive ever had the misfortune of seeing open for a better band. Notice how other reviews rattle off the bands these guys so shamelessly steal from. Youd be much better served supporting one of those bands. These guys are flash-in-the-pan garbage. I know im being harsh, but the state of popular music will further deevolve which each record sale these guys make. Though maybe they just need a new frontman, cause the other guys seem to have SOME talent....

Formed: 2003 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Los Angeles DJs Justin Warfield and Adam "Adam 12" Bravin formed the moody, Joy Division-inspired She Wants Revenge in 2003. A fortuitous combination of word of mouth, industry connections, and airplay on Sirius Satellite Radio and West Coast airwave giant KCRW provided the duo with enough exposure to snag a record deal with Geffen, resulting in a 2006 self-titled release that drew comparisons to Interpol, early Depeche Mode, and the Bravery, as well as their aforementioned eternally depressed post-punk...
