iTunes Review

Cloudland Canyon’s 2008 album Lie in Light was the last with Simon Wojan, who left after its release. Subsequently, founding member Kip Uhlhorn recruited his wife, Kelly, who bestowed breathy inflections throughout 2010’s Fin Eaves, a markedly mellower recording than its Krautrock-inspired predecessor. The gauzy opener, “No One Else Is Around,” is awash in experimental dream-pop. Androgynous whispers are nearly buried under layers of oversaturated guitar reverb, digital delay, and blissed-out distortion that recall early Flying Saucer Attack. At only one minute and 17 seconds of Pete Kember–inspired noise, it’s a wonder why the following instrumental was rewarded title-track status. But “Sister” is a true standout with uplifting, gospel-rooted melodies soaring from the abysmal depths of a sonic storm, bursting with moments that sound like Spiritualized on an upswing. Co-written by Kip and Kelly Uhlhorn, “Pinklike/Version” is a hypnotic symphony of sonic textures grooving under a tambourine like a much cleaner Methodrone-era Brian Jonestown Massacre. This one begs for further spousal collaboration.

Beautiful noise

Not treading any new aural terrain here by any means, in fact the fuzzed-out, reverb drenched aesthetic owes as much to the Jesus and Mary chain and My Bloody Valentine (though leaning much more in the direction of the former) as it does indie rocks' recent preoccupation with both. But, man, does it work despite it's heavily influenced sleeves. Taking a more ambient/drone direction with unflinching, rhythmic electronic drum tracks, this is beautiful noise.

this is the thang that smokes!!!! i love it. SO CATCHEY! surprised it wasn't even bigger, when it came out.

Also the name of a state park in Georgia, experimental outfit Cloudland Canyon carry on the abstract electronic sounds pioneered by such artists as Ash Ra Tempel and Edgar Froese, while touching on elements of dream pop and occasionally flirting with stargazing disco rhythms. The project began in 2002 when Kip Uhlhorn, the Brooklyn-based guitarist for Panthers (and prior to that screamo band the Red Scare) met German multi-instrumentalist Simon Wojan when Uhlhorn was touring Europe.
