Come To Popa

So many reviewers oversell artists they like. I'll try to show some restraint and lay it out as I hear it/see it. Popa Chubby is a fine guitarist who is NOT just all notes and technique. At his best he communicates real feeling in his playing. He is at least a fair singer (and when in the slow blues/soul vein, far better than that). I would certainly rate his vocals above Hendrix, and at least on a par with Stevie Ray. He is also becoming a better and better songwriter, and his Somebody Let the Devil Out is infectious - and when you "get" that it's about 9/11, I think it is one of the best songs written to date about that tragedy. The guitar is haunting and the lyrical refrain seems to just about say it all. This live recording captures more of his best qualties than his studio albums (although they are well worth listening to and getting). Give Chubs a good "preview" listen - read his bio at AMG, spend some time getting to know his playing. Then get the album. I think most fans of electric blues will be very pleased with the performances on this album and after coming to Popa once, will return many more times.

The best thing about blues is hearing about someone or something more miserable than you are currently experiencing makes you happy!

This live album will not win any awards for originality, it's just great blues music that sounds great played loud.

Stand out track for me is 'Stress Will Kill You Every Time'. If you live Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore or Jeff Healy you will like this. I personally recommend.

A very talented man. Playing with passion and feeling. Money well spent!

Born Ted Horowitz in the Bronx, New York, Popa Chubby was the son of a candy store owner. At 13, Chubby began playing drums; shortly thereafter, he discovered the music of the Rolling Stones and began playing guitar. Although he grew up in the 1970s, Chubby took his cue from artists of the '60s, including Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among others. By the time he was in his early twenties, he enjoyed and played blues music, but also worked for a while backing punk poet...
