EDITORS’ NOTES

You can’t keep Dream Evil out of the power-metal game. On the Swedes’ first album in seven years, they still sound like a finely tuned engine. Niklas Isfeldt leads the way with his booming voice; he climbs to the sky on the gloriously chugging “Antidote,” then shifts to his low register to spin sinister melodies on the crunchy “Six Hundred and 66.” The guitars rip jet-screaming riffs throughout, while “How to Start a War” uses precisely picked scales.

7 year break too long apparently

I love Dream Evil enough to put them in my top 5 of bands; and that's mostly due to the unique, powerful voice of Niklas Isfeldt combined with the catchy, powerful riffs and choruses. However, on this album, something seems off with him when he goes for the higher notes. It seems like he is straining or perhaps he's just not meshing with the somewhat different than usual tones/style of the instrumentals behind him. I can write plenty more but I'll summarize by saying this: if someone asked me to put on a few Dream Evil songs to hear what they're all about, I would skip over any song from this album. Still good music and flashes of the unique Dream Evil stuff, but it's taking many listens to "get used to" even for a die-hard fan like me...and that's just not a good sign for an album. Especially when listening to their older stuff, I was hooked instantly upon many tracks during/after just one listen. Oh well. I'll give it a 4/5 star rating to be nice and support the metal 🤘🏼. But a 3 or 3.5 is more realistic for me.
