iTunes Editors’ Notes

Bobby Hecksher has been a busy guy, taking time off from his Hawkwind–meets–Spacemen 3 band Warlocks to start his own record label, Zap Banana. Whether he’s burned some bridges at stellar past labels like Tee Pee and Bomp! or whether he just wants total control, it’s an interesting move for the distortion diva. The Warlocks have had a rough time selling their brand of opiated, brawny psych-rock, and Skull Worship might be a tough sell all around. After the four and a half minutes of momentum on the steamrolling “Dead Generation” and the Wooden Shjips flavors of the rippling “Chameleon,” the energy ebbs; from there, much of Skull Worship is in the same vein. Still, the drowsy, fluid numbers like “He Looks Good in Space” and “You’ve Changed” (Pink Floyd meets Brian Jonestown) are gorgeous things, as is the acoustic “Silver & Plastic.”

Hecksher was later invited to play on Beck's Stereopathetic...
