Album Review

With a heaviness that leans more on melancholy than malice, Inter Arma deliver a genre-spanning metal experience with Sky Burial. Where most metal can easily fall under the "apocalyptic" description, the album here has a kind of lonely openness about it that feels more like the soundtrack to the cataclysmic aftermath than the event itself. Even during tracks like "'Sblood," where a stampede of percussion and harmonic feedback creates an almost suffocating oppressiveness, there's still enough atmosphere to create the feeling of the song being inescapable without that sense of claustrophobia one might normally find in black metal. Relying more on melancholy than menace, Inter Arma have created an album that's more about the various moods that metal's many subgenres evoke than their individual songwriting tropes. This focus on ambience really makes Sky Burial feel like it exists in a very specific, and very secluded, space, and while you probably wouldn't want to live there, it's amazing to visit.

Love It!!!

I was just telling my husband the other day how bored I am with metal. We were born in the mid seventies and grew up through all the major metal movements - hair metal, thrash, death, black, industrial, name it, we were into it. The past year or two, I have been leaning more toward indie rock and darker electronic because with the exception of Agalloch, Kylesa, and a handful of other bands, I haven't heard anything that really lights me up. All the metal I have sampled sounds generic or seems geared towards angst ridden teenagers with mommy and daddy issues. Somehow, I stumbled upon this album and I am blown away..My faith in metal has been restored. Thank You!!!

Album of the year?

Totally mindblowing. Metal record of the year?

Metal AOY

Hypnotic, mesmerizing, addictive. You will be fully encompassed in this work of art. One of the best albums I have heard from the metal world in years. It has something for everyone. Sludge, Black Metal, Southern Rock, Progressive/Post-Metal all make an appearance on this mind bending record. This album will bring you to places you have never experienced listening to this record. Sometimes I felt like I was listening to "Wish You Were Here" and then other times I felt like I was listening to Neurosis mixed with Godspeed You Black Emperor! But bottom line Inter Arma are in a league of their own! Recommended tracks. ALL.
