Jackie Parris, Together Again

A nightowl at fourteen, I listened to Norm on HDH to the wee hours in my housing project bedroom a mile from the Mass Ave jazz clubs of those dear dead days. It was there in the room that overlooked a storage warehouse I first heard Jackie Parris doing Skylark like no one ever again or before. The purity of sound and the feeling filled inflection ...and the pure technical control of a a unique vocal instrument...stayed with me these fifty odd years...some odder than others! If you ever hear a sweeter, neater We''ll Be Together Again, call me, collect. Or You're Mine You. Twelve great cuts, one great unique voice, stilled just recently. So good to have Skylark again.

A taste worth acquiring

Jackie Paris could be described as an acquired taste, but his talents are surely worth the effort. He was a significant presence for 50+ years, although he never became the household name his fans hoped of him. "Skylark" was a recording that gave him his first major exposure to a mass audience. It's been a hard-to-find collector's item for a long time, and kudos to iTunes for making it available. This old LP sounds great in its new, digital life. It will introduce Jackie to a new generation of fans, and delight those who have worn the grooves down on their original copy.

Skylark, by Jackie Paris.

I love this album, It brings me back to the 50's My older brother played it till the record warped (78rpm). Jackie Paris had a sweet mellow voice. I tried in the past to get this recording but until now I finally got it. I'll enjoy it greatly. The songs are fabulous. Skylark, If love is good to me, I'm through with love, and the rest. Thank you! Paul.

Despite his talents as a singer, Jackie Paris never made it big nor even had a regular recording career. Paris, who played guitar with Nick Jerret's band in the early '40s, was in the Army during 1944-1946 and then became known a bit in New York where he was part of the bop scene, including touring with Charlie Parker. Paris recorded four songs in 1947 as a leader (including "Skylark") and five others in 1949 (highlighted by the first vocal version of "'Round Midnight"). He was with Lionel Hampton's...
