Album Review

To move ahead, or stick to a tried-and-true, effective formula? Such is the conundrum presented by Arrival, Hypocrisy's ninth album, which ditches the nearly anti-intellectual chuggery of its poorly received predecessor Catch 22, and takes a deliberate step back to the grandiose strains of benchmark albums The Final Chapter and Hypocrisy. One can't help but picture main songwriter Peter Tagtgren — sometimes referred to as the "death metal Rick Rubin" because of his oft-utilized production skills — crafting this creepy stuff in isolation, the drapes pulled, sunken eyes perusing the extreme metal cookbook, while pale, wiry limbs stir a bubbling cauldron of grandiose gothic chords and concoct beautifully ugly Euro-death skyscrapers. However, Tagtgren is spinning his wheels here a bit, resurrecting the (tired?) alien-invader themes of past records, yet still penning wonderfully nasty tunes with streamlined arrangements, and smartly sidestepping easy genre classification. He consistently skirts the edges of death and black metal while committing to neither; see the militaristic chug of "New World," the molten-lava tempo of skullcrusher "The Abyss," and the dense, murky melodicism of "Born Dead Buried Alive," "Dead Sky Dawning," and "Slave to the Parasites," all of which, come chorus time, boast catchy, distinctly Swedish hooks (see also: In Flames, Soilwork). Bottom line, Arrival impressively flexes its muscles with respect to performances (especially Tagtgren's unique myriad of death-derived vocal approaches), production and songwriting, and attention to detail and entertainment value, making it a difficult record to criticize. On its own, it's a terrific, memorable effort, but in the context of Hypocrisy's beefy catalog, it's a bit derivative, one expects a bit more boundary-pushing via the twisted, trusted, and well-respected mind of Tagtgren.

This album is the first one I heard from Hypocrisy! I have the Cd sitting on my nightable! I listen to it every night before I fall asleep! Born Dead Buried Alive: My least favorite song on the album, still pretty cool though 7/10 Eraser: This song alone got me hooked on Hypocrisy. My favortie song on the album 10/10 StillBorn: A fairly good song. The intro is a little nu metal, but it'll get better as the song goes on. 8.5/10 Slave to the Parasites: The instrument part is okay, but again, I thought the lyrics were a bit cheesy 8/10 New World: an often overlooked song, I myself didn't really like it at first, but give it a chance! 9/10 The Abyss: This song really showcases Peter's talent as a vocalist. The chorus blew me away! Another favorite on the album! 10/10 Dead Sky Dawning: Fairly average, the chorus sort of brought it down, but a good song none the less 8.5/10 The Departure: Another one of my favorites! This song just really caught my interest. Very original for a death metal band! 10/10 War Within: A nice album closer, yet often forgotten! Not too much melody though 8.5/10 Don't listen to itunes! This wasn't realeased in August 2006! It was in 2004! But whatever, I highly recommend this album! Virus is pretty good too! Thank you for taking the time to read my review!

Great album from another great swedish metal band. Definitly worth buying with awesome songs that delivers a brutal onslaught while still being melodic. I recommend eraser, slave to the parasite, new world,and departure. music like this makes you proud of your own country.

Cool Stuff

This is a cool album, Hypocrisy is a sweet band over all, but come on iTunes, this album isnt new, Virus is their newest album... I had this cd a year or two before Virus was even released. Anyway, this is a cool album and it's worth buying.

The Swedish death metal band Hypocrisy was formed by Peter Tägtgren in 1990 upon his return to Sweden from Florida, where he had been inspired by that state's flourishing death metal scene (bands like Morbid Angel, Deicide, Death, and Obituary). Hypocrisy's first demo was recorded entirely by Tägtgren himself; once it secured him a record deal, he recruited a lineup of Masse Broberg (vocals), Jonas Österberg (guitar), Mikael Hedlund (bass), and Lars Szöke (drums), while he himself settled on guitar....
