Editors’ Notes

The second release by The Barr Brothers (formerly of The Slip) is stunning in its restraint. The hypnotic and driving “Half Crazy” grabs hold immediately, partly because it’s the lone uptempo tune. The other 12 songs gather steam gradually but prove mesmerizing once they settle in. Rhythms ebb and flow and textures morph as a variety of instruments overlap. Guitars, banjo, harp, marimba, pedal steel, viola, organ, piano, horns, drums, African ngoni, and found-object percussion are all used. That’s a lot to control, but they do it well by artfully blending Delta blues, Appalachian folk, and West African influences into organic, otherworldly grooves.

Chills

Out walking my dog right now at midnight. First time giving this album a solid listen and I literally have chills. Brad's writing continues to impress and improve over the years and there is a cohesion on this album that surpasses their freshmen effort (which was great). I've always championed the idea of a SLiP reunion but after this album I can't wait to see the Barr Brothers live again. The SLiP will always be a possibility but for now this is more than sufficient. Bravo.

can't go wrong

these guys are so conscious about everything they do and are musicians of the highest caliber. their first release is incredible and no doubt this one will be too. everything they do is so original yet informed by many traditions. can't wait for this one to come out!

A breath of fresh air.

In these days of what the music industry feeds us (excessive machoism, violence, kindergarden level poetry, booty obscession, electronically processed vocals, all far more important than good music) this release is a welcome change. Just goes to show how "talent" creates good artistry. Love it from start to finish.
