Fans of Rachel Goswell’s gossamer singing in Slowdive and Mojave 3 shouldn’t be too surprised that the singer/songwriter’s solo material sounds like an evolution of Mojave 3’s country-tinged folk songs — though this time around the twangy guitars are eschewed for more honest hints of British folk in the guitars and melodies. That’s not to say that The Sleep Shelter E.P. sounds anything like those young people with beards who used to turn up in Arthur Magazine mimicking The Incredible String Band. “Plucked” opens with spare acoustic picking garnishing Goswell’s wistful inflections before layers of slightly effected electric guitars and a lilting string section build to birth the kind of womanly love song that would do well soundtracking the procession of a springtime wedding. “Sleepless & Tooting” picks up the pace sounding more like Mojave 3 with sublime banjo notes playing behind a shuffling rhythm and lightly grinding Hammond organ. Goswell takes a few risks on “Flying With Gene” as she allows her voice to sing beyond its whispery boundaries. “Come Rescue Me” boasts some beautiful British fiddle playing.
