Like its title, Above the Prairie is simultaneously of the earth and beyond it. The songs frontmen Benson Ramsey and David Huckfelt pen and sing are rooted in folk rock, but from the first moments of album opener “Aerial Ocean,” where ethereal textures give way to swooping steel guitar and acoustic strumming, earthiness is juxtaposed with gentle spaciness. That vibe is furthered by Ramsey and Huckfelt’s often otherworldly lyrical bent, as on the dreamy, metaphysical “Sleepy Hollow” or the dizzying rush of imagery on “Come What Is.”
