A Leroy Anderson Christmas

Wonderful arrangements but....
This album contains what Anderson originally called "Suites of Carols" for strings, for winds, and for brass. These three suites plus Christmas Festival and Sleigh Ride comprise the whole. The only caveat is that the sound is curiously brittle -- as if recorded with a dime store microphone. BUT that is what the original LP sounded like 45 years ago, as well. The arrangements are the thing. I bought the LP while in high school because many of these arrangements became mainstays of our high school symphony orchestra repertoire. They are fun to play and equally fun to listen to. Anderson was a knowing arranger (having arranged extensively for the Boston Pops). These arrangements are idiomatic, clever, and sometimes sophisticated. Great fun all. The music gets five stars. The recording quality (no fault of iTunes) is another matter...
What a treat!
I grew up (1960's) with this music from the original LP. I still have it - scratched and worn from MANY years of playing - and was considering going to the effort of transcoding it from the original. I'm so tickled to find this already converted for me! Yes, the sound seems a bit brittle...but trust me, it sounds way better than the original. Highly recommended for the woodwind and brass ensemble arrangements.
Leroy Anderson at his finest! Great Christmas tracks - timeless.
