iTunes Review

In 2002, Westbound assembled Toys, the first officially-sanctioned collection of Funkadelic outtakes and rarities. These nine tracks come from the band’s 1970-1974 heyday, before the cartoonlike mythology and surreal funk of Parliament overtook George Clinton’s imagination. In those crucial early years, the band’s music was built on the mighty talents of its musicians, primarily guitarist Eddie Hazel, keyboardist Bernie Worrell and drummer Tiki Fulwood. “Slide On In” and “Vampy Funky Bernie” are two jams drawn from the sessions for Free You Mind… And Your Ass Will Follow, the band’s 1970 acid funk tour de force. The former song sounds like Elmore James jamming with Sly Stone, while the latter is Funkadelic’s take on the sticky organ jazz of Jimmy Smith. Both songs are spacier than anything on the official album, which is gloriously raucous. That side of the band is shown on the wonderful early versions of “You Can’t Miss What You Can’t Measure,” “The Goose” and “Wars of Armageddon.” The rest of the tracks split the difference between Clinton’s lifelong love of church music (“Talk About Jesus”) and his impending vision of interstellar funk (“Stink Finger”).

Though they often took a back seat to their sister group Parliament, Funkadelic furthered the notions of black rock begun by Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, blending elements of '60s psychedelia and blues plus the deep groove of soul and funk. The band pursued album statements of social/political commentary while Parliament stayed in the funk singles format, but Funkadelic nevertheless paralleled the more commercial group's success, especially in the late '70s when the interplay between bands moved the...
