iTunes Editors’ Notes

Welshman Dave Edmunds made a career of pulling melodies from rockabilly roadhouses, English pubs, and country lanes. So this near career-spanning collection is a swell mixer of history-tripping nostalgias. It reveals Edmunds' ability to absolutely possess songs he didn’t write; stunning are his takes of Smiley Lewis’ “I Hear You Knockin’,” Elvis Costello’s “Girls Talk” (live here), Nick Lowe’s “I Knew the Bride,” John Fogerty’s “Almost Saturday Night,” and The Everly Brothers’ gorgeous “Let It Be Me.” Worthy oddities abound too, such as the Jeff Lynne–helmed “Slipping Away” and “Run Rudolph Run” from the Party Party soundtrack.

Customer Reviews

At last -- but no, we're still screwed

Finally the original version of I Hear You Knocking is available on I-Tunes. (None of the other versions long available here come close.) But, of course, you have to buy the whole bloody album to get it. Well, forget that. I already wasted money on two other versions of this track, I don't want any of his others, and good as it is, the song ain't worth ten bucks.

Not worth the money

I agree, "I hear you knockin" is the only song I'm interested in, and I'm not paying $10. for it

Finally I Hear You Knocking...but read the article for why only album!

I've been waiting a long time for I Hear You Knocking, but not surprised it's album only. Read the review at the top-licensing is a problem. As with most of the album only songs, money, money, money. That being said, there's a few songs on here that almost makes it worth shelling out the $9.99. Almost.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Roots rockers are seldom as purist as Dave Edmunds. Throughout his career, he stayed true to '50s and '60s rock & roll — for Edmunds, rock & roll history stopped somewhere in 1963, after the Beach Boys' first singles but before the Beatles' hits. After establishing himself as a hotshot lead guitarist in the blues-rockers Love Sculpture, he launched his solo career by painstakingly re-creating oldies in his own studio, usually recording every track by himself. Through all of his efforts,...
