Editors’ Notes

Brand Nubian’s 1989 debut stands at the convergence of several strands of hip-hop history. It has its roots in the origins of New York hip-hop — park jams and disco parties — and yet is also one of the definitive statements of Five Percenter ideology and late-'80s urban militancy. It is traditional and angered, and yet purveys the low-key funk rhythms and conversational flows of the vanguard Native Tongues collective. Each song is fueled by the chemistry between the group’s three distinctive personalities. Grand Puba plays the effervescent and unpredictable leader, Sadat X his harder-edged facsimile, and Lord Jamar the testy, articulate scholar. The trio’s sense of play and colorful wardrobes at first disguised the incendiary content of their rhymes. “Wake Up” and “Drop the Bomb” present sharply articulated messages of rage, but the beats and rhymes are so elastic and fun that the listener has no choice but to digest the group’s fiery philosophy. In terms both musical and verbal One for All is densely packed and it bears repeated listens — each successive visit will turn up new discoveries in the corners of these 16 songs.

The Five Percent Nation of Islam was a popular inspiration for numerous thinking-man's rap groups during the early '90s, and Brand Nubian was arguably the finest of the more militant crop. Although they were strongly related to the Native Tongues posse in style and sound, they weren't technically members, and were less reserved about spotlighting their politics and religion. Their outspokenness led to controversy, on an even larger scale than similarly minded groups like the X-Clan or Poor Righteous...
