iTunes Review

In the ‘80s, Twila Paris helped to pioneer modern worship music by adapting Scripture into pop/rock idioms. Her honey-toned vocals and adept songwriting have been largely absent from the Christian music airwaves in recent years; Small Sacrifice is Paris’ bid for relevance in the current marketplace. The album surrounds Twila in tasteful sonic landscapes, favoring keyboard-centered tracks embellished with acoustic guitar touches. Some tunes — especially the Irish-accented “Alleluia” and the Chris Rodriguez duet “I Can Do All Things” — recall her earlier work, while “We Know Love” has a more contemporary feel. Paris explores the theme of a believer’s connection with God (and the struggles to maintain it) throughout the album. The title track and “Lord I Need You” are fervent expressions of awe and reverence. At times, the lyrics settle into simple repetition, as in “You Are a Great God.” More substantial is “There Is a Plan,” a dramatic look at recent world history in the light of Biblical prophecy. All told, Small Sacrifice is a work of maturity and perspective, done by an artist who remains close to the Spirit.

Fresh, yet timeless

No one is more consistent than Twila Paris. An incredibly gifted singer/songwriter, once again she delivers a strong collection of songs on this her first self-released album. As expected, the lyrics are penned with keen spiritual observation. Each song when unpacked could fill a month of Sundays study. This deep layering is what sets her apart from any other Christian songwriter. In this she has no equal. Her songs are living, breathing...always at the ready to teach, admonish, encourage, give hope... But if you listen closely, you'll notice there's a marked difference in the music. The production is intricate and fresh. I'm happy to see she's shaken the colorless, hackneyed "praise" style music, and given us complex, substantive, and dare I say "edgy" musicality. Freed from the shackles of a label, status quo has flown out the door and she's letting us see who she really is...and it's amazing! This is Twila at her most intimate, most creative best. "Small Sacrifice" is destined to be a timeless classic in her extensive repertoire. Buy it, play it, then marinate in the presence of the Lord.

Another great album!!

Listening to Twila's new album reminded me of why I have loved her music for years. Her creativity and lyrics are timeless and as always bring you back to the heart of God. Thanks for another great album!!

She delivers and leads up to worship

I am not a devout Christian but Twila's music reminds me of God and Christ. I have been listening to her since The Warrior is a Child and she is inspiring. This new CD delivers in good melodies, strong harmonies, lyrics to make you think about all that is good. I love I Can Do All Things but the rest will grow on me for sure. Her voice has that calming effect, when I have a bad day when nothing is going right, her voice leads me the peace that I need.

Known among fans as "the modern-day hymnwriter," Twila Paris was among contemporary inspirational music's most prolific singers and composers. A native of Arkansas, her grandparents were itinerant preachers, holding outdoor revival meetings and planting churches; her grandmother even wrote songs for use at evangelistic meetings. Paris' father was himself a musician, as well as the leader of an area youth mission; a life of religion and music was seemingly her destiny, and indeed she enjoyed great...
