Customer Reviews

a unique talent, gone too soon.

This is a remarkable collection of songs and my personal favorite of the artist's unfortunately limited releases. The vocals are so cutting and deeply moving. The phrasing and timing are exquisite. Some might call it sparse or even melancholy and they would not be completely wrong. But there is so much depth and talent here that should not be overlooked. It would be wrong to label this album as simply "latin" or "world music". The artist is at home singing in English, French or Spanish but it is an oversimplification to put her music in such small boxes. Neither is this just another collection of "love-gone-wrong" songs. I am reminded just a little of Kris Delmherst but but with a substantially broader pallette. The themes are eternal and very human. Two of my favorites are: "Anywhere on this road" and "My name".

It is so unfortunate that Lhasa de Sela left this world so soon. It would have been an amazing journey to see how her unique talent would have grown. The final piece "Soon this space will be too small" is a fitting finale, a quiet, clear, optimistic requiem for a great artist. She died at age 37 on January 2010 after a long struggle with breast cancer.
