Editors’ Notes

Naturally, anyone who loves the songs presented here should own the original versions, which sent a chill up America’s collective spine upon their releases in the early ‘60s through the early ‘80s. Smokey Robinson is an R&B and soul singer beyond peer; he was once a hitmaking machine with The Miracles, as a solo artist, and with other artists, such as Marvin Gaye and The Temptations. This album presents modern duet versions, assembled without the singers necessarily sharing the same room; they're mostly well matched. For example, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler free-associates throughout “You Really Got a Hold on Me” in a must-hear performance that's likely to divide listeners. R&B singers Mary J. Blige and Ledisi, who perform “Being with You” and “Ooh Baby Baby,” respectively, are the two most perfectly fit for Robinson’s soul music, while James Taylor is just right on “Ain’t That Peculiar.” Songs like “The Way You Do (The Things You Do)” and “Tears of a Clown” are virtually indestructible, and Cee Lo Green and Sheryl Crow have fun with them.

Smokey Is Better Than This

Smokey's last album, "Time Flies When You're Having Fun" was an excellent, contemporary offering with duets including Joss Stone, India.Arie and an even wonderful guitar solo by the Kennedy Center Honoree, Carlos Santana. After the success of Lionel Richie's Nashville covers of his classics with marquee country names including Shania Twain doing a fickle cover of "Endless Love". The marketing was excellent topped off with a television special.
I love Smokey. I have since I was a kid. But this album is so below his standards. I hope it sells tonnage hopefully, they have lined up another television special because the Lionel Richie special was a ratings success. But I cannot wait until his next album of new material.

Where is Diana

love the new duets CD... would love it even more if it included a duet with Diana! and even some clowning around with Mick Jagger on a tune although Steve Tyler is cool. I know it is hard to line up artists because of schedules etc.... but Smokey is such an American Music Icon that this should be a "double CD" package.... and it would be even all the more fun if there was at least one duet with "Clauldette"... Smokey fans know Claudette. Oh, and I forgot would also love it more if it included some covers of other non-Smokey tunes too because no one can do a an original Smokey song better than Smokey Robinson!

Berry Gordy founded Motown Records, but one could argue that Smokey Robinson was the man who first pushed America's most iconic soul music label toward greatness. As the leader of the Miracles, Robinson was one of the very first artists signed to the fledgling label in 1959, and while he racked up many hits for it with the Miracles and as a solo act, Robinson was also an invaluable behind-the-scenes talent who wrote songs, produced records, scouted and groomed talent, and served as a vice president...
