EDITORS’ NOTES

Leon Bridges’ retro-soul debut is so impressively dead-on you might wonder where he parked his time machine. Channeling the buttoned-up charm of Sam Cooke and the mellower side of Otis Redding (as well as contemporary throwbacks like Raphael Saadiq), Coming Home captures a moment in the early '60s when gospel met blues and blossomed into soul. It was the period-perfect title track that helped Bridges gain an audience beyond his Texas hometown, but the swaying dedication to his mother, “Lisa Sawyer,” is every bit as lovely.

Modern Soul

Alex Kerber,

I had the privilege of seeing Leon's very first show in Chicago and I was completely amazed by his captivating performance. His vocals match his nostalgic 50's-60's style and he was able to bring the theater to a different decade. This record hones inspiration from the greats, most notably the legendary Sam Cooke, like Mr. Cooke, Leon has the ability to generate raw emotion through story-telling lyrics. Observation is key for any good song writer, and these lyrics are beautiful.

This record translates really well live, and is going to be a powerhouse in the soul music community. With a beautiful voice coupled with beautiful style - Leon Bridges is very well on his way to a dynamic career. "Coming Home", I believe, has the power to become a record that kids in a couple decades will be talking about. All the proof is in the already available "River", CHILLS! Get this album and support Leon Bridges!

Based on his live show...

The0perator,

Saw him and his band open for Lord Huron in April, and played an absolutely killer show. This guy’s going places, and can’t wait to have the album in my collection.

About Leon Bridges

Leon Bridges' first strides as a retro-soul artist prompted comparisons to R&B legends like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. A singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Bridges performed in and around Fort Worth, Texas and stirred up music industry interest with analog recordings, produced by Justin Block and Austin Jenkins of White Denim, which were uploaded to his SoundCloud page. Signed to major-label Columbia, his first singles -- including a rich ballad written about his mother -- appeared in February 2015 with a sound that evoked mid- to late-'60s soul. The following month, Bridges caught more attention with a performance at the South by Southwest Festival, roughly 200 miles south of his home base. His debut album, Coming Home, was released in June 2015. ~ Andy Kellman
