Album Review

Reasons Why is a double-disc best-of that treats Nickel Creek's fanatical fan base to a solid overview of this progressive bluegrass band's recorded career. There are 12 tunes here than can be called bona fide "greatest hits," at least among the faithful. They include "The Lighthouse's Tale," "Jealous of the Moon," "When in Rome," the title cut, of course, and their fantastic reading of Carrie Newcomer's "I Should Have Known Better." In addition, there are two live cuts — including Keith Whitley's "You Don't Have to Move That Mountain" and a steaming take of their own breakdown workout "The Fox" — and a DVD that includes all seven of the trio's videos. Those who already have the albums will be gratified for the record of the videos, and the live tracks are nothing to sneeze at. Perhaps there should have been a "best of" done live, but for now, this is it.

A good summary of their work.

I can't wait to hear the new album in 2014.

Not Complete!

A greatest hits album that does not include "Speak" on it? In what universe?

Ok, don't

Do not buy this album, it's goin to mess it up for you! This is the one and only band with four albums of perfection that has no filler songs. Every last song is worth it! Buy all the albums! Start with "this side".
Making a summary of their work is foolishness to me. I grew up with their amazing music, and I listened to the same songs time and time over again because I have always loved this band. If you don't believe me, your going to miss out on "doubting Thomas" and "Green and Gray"

Distinguished by their youth and eclectic taste, Nickel Creek became a word-of-mouth sensation on the progressive bluegrass scene and soon found their appeal spreading beyond the genre's core audience. Guitarist Sean Watkins, fiddler Sara Watkins (his younger sister), and mandolin/banjo/bouzouki player Chris Thile first started performing together in 1989, when all three were preteens and taking music lessons in their native San Diego. They met while watching the local band Bluegrass Etc., which...
