iTunes Review

Probably the greatest compliment one can pay High On Fire is that no band comes heavier. As stoner/doom-metal dudes, Matt Pike and Co. (bassist Jeff Matz and drummer Des Kensel) go for the jugular at all points, relegating subtlety to other bands not as singularly devoted to producing such heaviness. The title track crunches for eight-plus minutes that tributes Celtic Frost at their heaviest before giving way to the album’s first “single,” “Frost Hammer,” where the band tightens the approach ever so slightly: only in comparison to the complete shredders that follow. “Ghost Neck” begins the furious roll of the album’s second half where the band makes a brilliant bid as 2010’s most essential metal band. “The Path” is the minute-and- -a-half intro that sends the group into its darkest corner. “Fire, Flood & Plague,” “How Dark We Pray” and “Holy Flames of the Firespitter” offer solid marching tunes that veer into melodic passageways just under the dungeon. The multi-year wait for Snakes has brought a notable addition to their impeccable catalog.

AWESOME!

Snakes for the Divine is a gift from the Metal Gods. Every track is as heavy as thunder. Every lyric is more brutal than the one before it. The solos melt face and the riffs wrench gut. This album shows why Matt Pike is the pure embodiment of Metal.

If you had asked me if High on Fire was going to be able to top Death is this Communion I would have asked you to pass me whatever you were smoking. Every Expectation I had for Snakes for the Divine has been met and crushed with heavy metal fury.

Buy it now! Listen! Lift up your goblet of rock and thank the Metal Gods for this gift!

Cimmerian Wolves of Metal.

In every metal head's room is a black light, and under their bed is a stack of "Savage Sword of Conan". And every damn one of you dreams of riding mastodons across the tundra, it's fur matted with the blood of your conquests. The sorcerer who crossed you and your clan lying smoldering in the cave-fire you threw him in.
Whoah, sorry. Been listening to "Snakes For the Divine".
Yes, it's THAT good.

Yeah, This is the Stuff

I've been a fan since Sleep's first record and through the entire rise of HOF...this album may be the album to put this band over the top and into the minds of all the metal masses...not just the diehards. In most cases that would scare me, but HOF are such purists and so talented musically that it just doesn't matter. These guys deserve all the credit in the world for keeping underground metal full throttle and it's about time they get some credit on a national level. The songs on this album are "brutal" as most people have pointed out already...but lyrically, I think this is Matt Pike's best performance and the new producer has brought a more focused sound to what was already the best lineup in metal...sh*t, in rock period. Buy this album NOW...instant metal classic.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, bass player George Rice, and drummer Des Kensel formed High on Fire in 1999, following the collapse of Pike's previous band, doom metal titans Sleep. But while Sleep had built their fame on impossibly slothful tunes and copious weed consumption, High on Fire's first release, The Art of Self Defense, displayed a far more aggressive though still fantasy-themed style of heavy metal. Released to mildly enthusiastic reviews, the album's prospects suffered from label Man's...
