Album Review

Recorded live at the Roxy, Scratch was one of the Crusaders' best recordings, an extravaganza of jazz and funk with great soloing from the group on top of a set of excellent grooves. From the loose-limbed funk of "Scratch" to a restless, understated version of their live standard "Eleanor Rigby" (which they'd been performing live for over six years), the Crusaders displayed a command of R&B forms in a jazz context. Another cover, Carole King's "So Far Away," is betrayed by a muddy '70s arrangement and sound, but nothing else here fails to illustrate the excellence of the best R&B group in the jazz world.

Why iTunes offers the song on this album the way they do, I'll never know. I wouldn't worry about it, though. Go ahead and buy the whole damn album - you won't be disappointed despite the fact that it is only five songs. Believe me, it's WORTH EVERY PENNY. They do well with the covers, but they really shine on their own tunes.

Scratch - the most scratched album in my 1977 record collection

There aren't nearly enough stars to rate this powerful performance. Each and every track stands on it's own. This is a CLINIC for any musician who wants to understand the sound of the Jazz Funk/R&B heyday that was the 70's. Felder, Hendersen, Sample, Hooper, Carlton, Bennett.....just an amazing group who take you to another place with a crisp funky beat, and swing harmonies in perfect unison. Never before and likely never again will tenor sax/bone duets sound so good. Felder and Henderson are joined at the hip on this one. If you are a musician, you need to listen to this over and over and over again. This is the "Prego" of Jazz R&B. "Put your nose against the's in there" Are you a sax player who wants to hear a rare demonstration of circular breathing? Listen to "So Far Away", where Wilton Felder plays a single note for a full minute! Okay, I'm going to stop typing now, because I could write all day about the virtues of this album, both as a listening experience, and also as a complete lesson on how it's DONE. Buy it, love it, learn it!

Welcome to Jazz

Back in 1954, Houston pianist Joe Sample teamed up with high school friends tenor saxophonist Wilton Felder and drummer Stix Hooper to form the Swingsters. Within a short time, they were joined by trombonist Wayne Henderson, flutist Hubert Laws, and bassist Henry Wilson and the group became the Modern Jazz Sextet. With the move of Sample, Felder, Hooper, and Henderson to Los Angeles in 1960, the band (a quintet with the bass spot constantly changing) took on the name of the Jazz Crusaders. The following...
