Album Review

One common complaint of electronica detractors is that when you listen to it any other place but the dancefloor, it all starts to sound the same after a while. But there are certainly a few exceptions to the rule, such as San Francisco-based DJ/producer Miguel Migs. While he has no problem whipping up tunes that can get a dance party hopping (such renowned artists as Britney Spears, Macy Gray, and Lionel Richie have sought out Migs for remixes), he's certainly no one-trick pony, as evidenced by his 2008 release, Those Things Remixed. Using his 2007 release, Those Things, as a starting point, other remixers put their own spin on most of the album's tracks (the only track from the original that's missing here is "Body Never Lies"). Fans of Migs and modern dance in general are sure to find a new favorite or two here, as a "Crazy P Superfunk Remix" of "Sometime" and a "Faze Action Afrotonic Re-Rub" of "Fire" take Migs' original versions even further into the dance stratosphere.

Simply, a True Piece of Art

I'm a fan of nu-jazz and electronic. This is the perfect mix of both. I never knew that this album would have come out, because it's impossible to imagine releasing from (Dub)le M. (That's my nickname for him...) I'm sure Mark de Clive-Lowe would have loved to remix and buy the whole CD. 1. Sometime (Crazy P***s Superfunk Remix) (3/10) 2. Those Things (Simon Grey Phase II Vocal) (10+/10) - I wish there was an instrumental 3. Make Things Happen (Miguel Mgs Stripped Down Vocal) (1/10) - poorly mixed. 4. Giving It All (Miguel Migs Dub Deluxe) (10/10) 5. Fire (Faze Action Afrotonic Re-Rub) (10/10) 6. So Far (RF Farplane Radio Edit) (8/10) 7. Let Me Be (Miguel Migs Salted Vocal) (10/10) 8. Can't Get Through (MB Deep Vocal) (8/10) 9. Mesmerized (Alix Alvarez Sole Channel) (10/10) 10. So Far (EOSRD) (9/10) - a great club hit. 11. Side 2 Side - I'm not sure what to rate, but he should have gotten Bugz in the Attic to remix it or cut it off the remix CD and make the original a bonus track. 12. Fire (Cottonbelly Remix) (7/10) - sounds like a 70's/80s spy film 13. Shake It Up (J-Boogie Mix) (6/10) - they could have losed the rap. 14. Get Down (DC Spring Vocal) (9/10) - a great ending to an overall great record.

Though he didn't found the label, Miguel Migs' productions (under the Petalpusher and L'isha aliases as well as his own name) gained the most fame for Naked Music, the house label formed by producer Jay Denes (aka Naked Music NYC). The template for Naked Music -- audible since its first release, Petalpusher's "Breaking It Down" -- is smooth, polished, organic house music, much more chilled than mainstream house and surprisingly song- and musician-oriented for the norm in the dance world.
