Album Review

Johnny Gill released his fifth album, Let's Get the Mood Right, only a few months after he participated in the New Edition reunion. In other words, it was timed to cash in on the group's massive comeback success. If he had delivered a dud, such crass commercial planning would have been in poor taste, but it's his strongest album in years, thanks to an excellent selection of songs and a stellar cast of producers, including Babyface, Tony Rich, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Gill shines at smooth soul like the title track, but what is remarkable about the album is how comfortable he sounds with the uptempo, albeit low-key, dance numbers. It's his best, most consistent album since Johnny Gill.

Real Sanga

Wow, how music and so called R&B has changed. This is JG's greatest work right here, hands down. Compared to present day music you'll probably conclude that there is no comparison whatsoever. This was done during that era when artists were exactly that: artists. Their songs had more than a beat and catch phrases. They were, for some, solutions to problems, inspiration to some, enlightening for some, heartbreaking for some, groundbreaking for some, thought inducing for some, funny to some and even served as testimonies for some in the form of music. Why or how, you ask? Because this is when artists cared about the messages in their work and how it reflected on them as people. When artists cared more about what they and others were experiencing in their lives as opposed to what's in their bank accounts. When men had respect for women and vice versa and it showed in their lyrics. When each song had a meaning even if it meant it's just simply time to dance. Real music, y'all. To bad those days have come and gone. RIP real music.

excellent album. arguably one of the greatest R&B albums of all time....

A singer behind eight solo and duet Top Ten R&B hits, as well as a member of New Edition since 1987, Johnny Gill was born in Washington, D.C., and began singing at a young age, beside his brothers in the gospel group Wings of Faith. His solo career began in 1983, when he signed to the Atlantic-affiliated Cotillion label and scored a number 29 R&B hit with his first single, the Freddie Perren-produced "Super Love." Even then, Gill had a mature and muscular voice -- one that sounded more like that...
