Album Review

A cofounder of the tropicalista movement with Veloso, Gil, Bethania, et al., Zé has faded into obscurity as his music becomes more and more experimental and eccentric. This is by far the best Brazilian recording I've ever heard (caveat emptor!), partly because of the gentleness of Zé's weirdness and partly because he sounds so Brazilian even as the other tropicalistas come to associate "avant-garde" with increasingly Pan American pop-soup.

A compositional masterpiece

Through word of mouth I have stumbled on to this gem of an album. Completely unfamiliar with Ze's work, I was floored the first time I heard it. Compositionally speaking, his works are beautiful examples of "not over-writing." Everything is simple and well thought out, with his soulful lyrics and infectous grooves topping off a perfect musical cocktail of creativity and innovation.

This album is amazing! Tom Ze in one word is FRESH! He's my new favorite artist

A mind expanding journey of starts and stops

I listened to this album a great deal when I was in my early 20s and I loved it because I had never heard anything like it before. One minute you're furrowing your brow and staring at the speaker the next you're on your feet twirling about to the music. A really great album, but expect the unexpected.

A restless thinker, he was adept at modern erudite music experimentations, yet he was always ignored by both industry and audiences until he was discovered by David...
