iTunes Editors’ Notes

So was Peter Gabriel's most commercially successful album. Released in 1986, it took the production techniques of the 1980s and twisted them to Gabriel's will. "Sledgehammer" was the album's mammoth hit, with "Don't Give Up," and Kate Bush's haunting guest vocal, and "In Your Eyes," a duet with Youssou N'Dour (eventually used to great effect in the 1989 film, Say Anything…), turning a great album into an iconic one. The soothing synthetic layers of "Mercy Street" fit Gabriel's smoky, romantic vocals like a bodysuit. The nuclear fears of "Red Rain" make for unsettling listening from an era where the Cold War was still very much on people's minds. This Special Edition includes "Live In Athens 1987," a concert from the supporting tour that includes highlights from Gabriel's extensive solo career song catalog, including "San Jacinto," "Shock The Monkey," "Games Without Frontiers," "Solsbury Hill" and "Biko" represented in glorious fighting form.

Here Comes the Flood of memories

Was it the groundbreaking video of Sledgehammer?
The Grammy nomination?
The iconic image of John Cusack holding up a boombox for Ione Skye?

'So' to me ths is the must have 1980's album whether it is vinyl, audiotape, CD, MP3, So+ and now this 25th Anniversary. It just gets better with age.

Speaking of which, having seen him first with the So Tour in 1987 to the recent Live Blood and Back to Front tours, he can still put on an amazing show.

Thank you Peter for 25+ years of amazing artistry!

Peter Gabriel Is The Man!

I'm a newer fan (20 years old) of Peter Gabriel, and I've recently bought Peter Gabriel 1-4, Us, and Up. (As well as his early contributions to Genesis) I've been listening to these masterpieces NONSTOP, and have been truly captivated by this artist. I held off on "So" however, because I saw that this special edition release was coming up, and figured I'd save my money and grab this. And boy am I glad I did! I never heard the original release of "So" therefore I cannot speak on the sound quality comparisons. I will say though that I am truly pleased with the mix and quality of this release. And the bonus live tracks are remarkable!

As a more recent fan, I must say that I am thrilled to own this glorious album, and am truly grateful to Mr. Gabriel for giving me such wonderful music to listen to throughout the rest of my life.

No DNA Disc???

It would've been nice if iTunes could have included the So DNA disc that shows the evolution of all these great songs. So is one of my favorite records and without griping too much, I wouldn't buy this album again just for the remaster. I was really excited to hear the outtakes disc. Not sure why it isn't included here...

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and...
